So E3 for EA Sports was yesterday, and myself being a huge fan of sports I could not wait. In particular, I couldn’t wait to see Madden 16 and NBA Live 16(yes I just typed that). And that’s no shot at PGA, NHL, or FIFA, I simply feel these two games needed the most changes. In this post, I want to discuss some gameplay features I saw on Madden 16.

Madden has been such a long standing franchise and I’ve played literally every one(I’m old enough to remember the passing windows on sega genesis) and typically do not complain much about the game. Madden 15 had its missteps, whether it was the known glitches or “money plays”, the adopted “chuck and pray”, or the addition of “warp tackles”, but overall I was ok with most of it. So when I got the information that the EA dev team has addressed many of these issues for Madden 16, I was obviously pleased to hear it. I’m anxious for August 20th to see if these things have been legitimately addressed.

Going into the gameplay, the WR/DB interaction seems drastically improved! The a bolt to control what type of catch your WR makes will surely separate good passers from elite passers. As soon as I saw that feature I bought about a great route runner like Antonio Brown running a dig route, getting separation and immediately cutting upfield after the catch rather than continuing to run across the field.

My excitement continued when I saw the video of OBJ making his now signature catch, but it wasn’t because of the catch, it was because of the coverage from Sam Shields on the play. Seeing Shields bump OBJ in that 5 yard window as OBJ attempts to get into his route is something I’ve wanted on Madden for years. Hopefully this takes away lesser WRs abusing elite CBs which was more than likely to happen in Madden 15, and that CBs will actually do the same in zone(cover 2) as in Man coverage.

Another thing I am happy about is the reintroduction of penalties. It’s not the fact that penalties may in fact cost me a game(besides my user skills), but rather that penalties are apart of the game and bring a sense of realism back to Madden that had been missing from the game.

The natural throwing motion for QBs is a cool addition but I don’t think it will have a huge effect on the gameplay and I’m fine with that.

My biggest concern from the videos and screenshots that I saw would have to be the cpu assistance on catching. While it is completely understandable during practice, I’m praying this can be turned off during the actual game then I have zero issues with it.

All in all, as usual, I am excited about the game itself and see how well it has enhanced from Madden 15, these features make it seem that madden is going towards some realism and away from the arcade feel, but of course only time will tell and boy I can’t wait! And be on the lookout for an article on NBA Live 16 too!
