I Want You Back: Games We’d Like to See Remastered for Current-Gen!

You can’t rewind time, but don’t you wish you could bring back some of your favorite games?

We sure do!

While there’s already a good number of games from previous-gen consoles that are being remastered for current-gen. But there’s still many more beloved titles and series we’d love to see brought back from the past.

Gabby and Katie of WeGotLadies have devised a list of five titles/series they’d each like to see remastered and brought to PS4 and Xbox One:

Gabby’s Picks

I will preface my entries by saying that I am an RPG/Sony fangirl. I love RPGs and I live for them!

1. The Legend of Dragoon

163823-Legend_of_Dragoon,_The_(USA)-8

Developed and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, The Legend of Dragoon is an RPG that follows the adventures of Dart and company as they pursue the Black Monster. A monster that destroys everything in its path, and discover the intriguing mystery behind the Moon Child and The Moon That Never Sets (which ties into absolutely everything in this story). This game not only had an amazing, unique story, but the battle system was cutting edge. They had a mid-battle party transformation battle was out of this world! Did I mention that the game soundtrack was amazing as well? Bringing this game to the Playstation 4 would undoubtedly be a huge success for Sony-nostalgia alone would guarantee sales!

2. Valkyria Chronicles

Valk_hero_vf3

Sega knew exactly what they were doing when they released Valkyria Chronicles! This beautifully illustrated tactical RPG/third-person shooter is absolutely astounding. In this game, you’re introduced to Welkin Gunther and Squad 7 as they take on Imperial forces that are trying to conquer the world! You have the power to build your team exactly as you see fit OR build it so that you attain the best tactical advantage (some characters work better with others, some don’t like getting dirty, some have fears of heights, the list goes on). There is a noticeable absence of tactical RPGs (or RPGs in general) on the PS4 and Sony should definitely consider an HD remake, or at least bring it to the PS4!

3. Dark Cloud 2

608442-dark_cloud2_front

Developed by Level-5 and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Dark Cloud 2 can be summarized in two words: customizable weapons! This action RPG actually allowed players to level up their weapons instead of their characters! In Dark Cloud 2, you make the acquaintance of Max and Monica as they journey together to rebuild the future that was destroyed by the evil Emperor Griffon. Rebuilding the future entails traveling to various towns and crafting buildings, trees, etc., as well as recruiting characters to live in these towns from your travels. Gameplay and personalized weapons alone merits an HD remake!

4. Ni No Kuni

Studio Ghibli. Need I say more? Level-5 makes another entry onto the list with Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. In this series published by Namco Bandai, you play as Oliver, a little boy on a quest to save his mother; and ultimately the world! If you love Pokémon, Ni No Kuni is right up your alley! As Oliver, you travel the world along with Esthe, Swaine, and Drippy, while capturing creatures and making them familiars. Along with active time battle, this game features a unique leveling-up system for your familiars, as well as an awesome soundtrack. This game won IGN’s (and several other site’s) Best RPG award in 2013.

5. Final Fantasy Tactics

Bring back Final Fantasy Tactics! This is the God of tactical RPGs! You play as Ramza Beoulve, an ex-noble to a royal family who goes on a quest to find his best friend, Delita, and expose the Church’s corruption (a very common theme in Final Fantasy games). What I love most about this game is the jobs: There’s a multitude of them! You can be anything, ranging from ninja and samurai, from white mage to summoner, and more! The possibilities for creating your perfect party are endless. Another aspect of this game that I love is the ability to use dragons and various chocobo in battle. What I need from Square Enix is to release Tactics the same way they released Final Fantasy 7 at last year’s E3: just simply bringing the game to the next gen console with original graphics. I don’t even need an HD remaster!

Katie’s Picks

1. .Hack series

hack1

Published by Namco Bandai, the .Hack series is a collection of single player, open-world RPG games for PS2 that are based off of an anime of the same name and similar plot. .Hack follows the story of Kite and other main characters as they traverse “The World”, a popular MMORPG, and try to uncover why many of its players are falling comatose, as well as what is causing the game’s massive viral infection. The series, consisting of Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine, has beautiful and unique characters designs, assigning the main characters and NPCS various classes (such as twin blade, heavy blade, and wavemaster), typical to an MMO. The plot is fresh, the artwork gorgeous, and the gameplay does not become repetitive. It also helps that the anime was great (one of my favorites) and set the tone for future MMO-style anime.

2. Bioshock series

bioshock

I could go on talking about this series for literally hours, seeing as it is one of my favorite video game series ever. Bioshock, developed by Irrational Games/2K, is a first-person shooter. Bioshock 1 and its sequel Bioshock 2 take place in the dystopic underwater city of Rapture in 1960. These two games follow the war between the people of Rapture, orchestrated by “Splicers,” people who have become addicted to ADAM, a substance found in sea slugs that can be used to modify genetic material and create mutant-like abilities. You play as a “Big Daddy”, a mutant human in an armored diving suit whose job is to protect “Little Sisters,” little girls who were created by scientists to extract ADAM from the slugs, and who have now become prey to the Splicers. The player also must deter the various corrupt authority figures of Rapture. Bioshock Infinite takes place in 1912, and follows Booker DeWitt and his quest to locate a woman named Elizabeth. Columbia is in the middle of political conflict between two groups: the Founders, a cult led by Zachary Comstock, who worships the American founding fathers as gods and want to keep Columbia available exclusively to white Americans, and the Vox Populi, a rebellion group led by Daisy Fitzroy who aim to restore the power in Columbia to all equal citizens. Along the way, Booker discovers the secrets behind Columbia’s creation and Elizabeth, with the story eventually linking the events to Bioshock 1 and 2. The dystopic bio/steampunk theme of this series alone could make anyone fall in love. With unique storytelling, exciting battle sequences, and captivating artwork, this game series  is arguably one of the greatest ever created (I sure think so). Imagining this series remastered with PS4 graphics would make anyone’s heart race.

3. Okami

okami

Okami is an action-adventure game published by Capcom. Set in Japan and based on Japanese myth and folklore, Okami tells the tale of how Amaterasu, the Shinto Sun Goddess who takes the form of a white wolf, saves the world from darkness and evil. Amaterasu utilizes the “Celestial Brush” for aid in combat and regular gameplay: Amaterasu can paint an attack, and even repair bridges using the brush. This is one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever laid eyes on, as it combines ink wash painting, woodcutting, and comic book style mimicry to create hard yet smooth “painted” linework and popping watercolor work, making this game seem that it was taken straight off of a hand-painted Japanese scroll. And with battle mechanics similar to that of The Legend of Zelda, a remastered version of this game would awe even the toughest gamers.

4. God of War series

2751524-9404780963-God-O

Who doesn’t love Greek mythology? God of War follows Spartan warrior/demigod Kratos and his quest to seek vengeance upon the Gods of Olympus after his family is killed due to Kratos being tricked by Ares, and then being betrayed by Zeus, who is later revealed to be his father. While there are games within the series that were released for Playstation Portable/mobile phones, the most significant games are God of War I, II, III, and Ascension. GOW spins a web of lies and deceit, making for wonderful and exciting storytelling. The character development is some of the best in the Playstation brand catalog, coupled with adrenaline-pumping battle sequences and bloody cutscenes. This series is possibly the best Greek mythos-based game ever-better than most films!

5. Bust a Groove series

bust_a_groove_2___characters_by_h8orsaints-d61wec2

It’s time to boogie! Bust a Groove is a combination music/fighting game published by Enix (now known as Square Enix). The player can select from a roster of characters, each with unique backstories and dance styles (such as capoeira, disco, and hip-hop), and can choose various game modes, including practice mode, arcade mode, and 2-player mode. It combines rhythm game elements with combat: the player presses the correct face buttons to the beat of the music, achieving combos that enable the player to execute special attacks on their opponent. The game also has unlockable hidden characters and stages. I spent hours playing this game as a child with family, and became downright addicted. Seeing this game remastered, or even simply just brought to the PS4 digitally, would be nostalgic and might even attract the attention of classic gamers-especially considering that newer-gen systems are severely lacking in the rhythm game department.

These are the games we’d like to see remastered, do you have any titles or series you’d like to see brought to current-gen systems? Leave a comment!
